Every year I swear I'm gonna skip the Gatlinburg leaf-peeping trip and every year I end up back in the Smokies by mid-October. This year we did the Gatlinburg fall foliage vacpack at Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort, which is the one with Wild Bear Falls indoor waterpark attached. Three nights for $129 total and the color was off the charts.
When to Go
Peak leaf color in the Smokies is usually October 12-22, give or take a week depending on the summer's rainfall. Lower elevations (Gatlinburg proper) turn first; higher elevations (Clingmans Dome, Newfound Gap) peak earlier in October. If your timing matters, aim for October 15-18 as a safe middle ground.
We went October 16-19 last year and it was absolutely perfect. Full color on the parkway, tolerable crowds, and the resort pool was still open for the kids which is a nice bonus.
The Vacpack
Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort runs 3-night preview packages at $99-$149 for leaf season. You get a 1-bedroom condo (sometimes a studio if the $99 tier), full access to Wild Bear Falls indoor waterpark, resort pools, and the lazy river. The units have fireplaces which is basicly the whole vibe your looking for in October.
Our unit was 850 sq ft, full kitchen, balcony facing the mountains. Compared to the average Gatlinburg cabin ($250-$400/night) this is the same experience for a fraction.
Parkway Traffic Hack
Everybody drives US-441 (the Parkway) through the park. Its a parking lot from 10am to 4pm daily in October. Here's the shortcut: enter from the Townsend side (west). Its quieter, the Cades Cove loop is on this side, and you can hit Clingmans Dome without fighting the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge traffic corridor.
Cades Cove at 7am is magical. By 10am its bumper to bumper. Get there early.
Food Strategy
Gatlinburg has alot of tourist-trap restaurants with lines out the door. Skip them. The kitchen in your vacpack unit does breakfast and lunch. For dinner, drive 20 minutes to Pigeon Forge and hit Mama's Farmhouse or Apple Barn. Half the crowd, better food.
