Why is Cancun's math better?
Three reasons, and none of them are about the resorts themselves. First, flight volume: Cancun's airport is one of the busiest international gateways in the hemisphere, and all that competition pushes fares down. Second, proximity — from Texas or the Southeast it's barely a two hour hop, so basic economy fares get silly cheap. Third, the preview package machine is mature there. The $149-$479 all-inclusive range exists becuase multiple operators compete for the same presentation-willing travelers, and competition is your friend. Yes, you'll sit through a 90-120 minute timeshare presentation, and yes the usual rules apply (25+, around $50K household income, couples together), but the discount is genuinly enormous.

Where does Punta Cana actually win?
Beaches and bubble-vibes. Punta Cana's Bavaro coastline is postcard-grade, the resort zones are newer on average, and if your plan is to never leave the property, the experience is fantastic. It also wins for East Coast travelers in a few cities where direct flights are competitive. But the moment you want to explore, the math turns: excursions are pricier, the resort zone is more isolated, and me and my wife found that every off-property taxi quote felt like a small hostage negotiation. Cancun's hotel zone has buses that cost about a dollar.
The stuff the brochure math leaves out
A few line items that never fit neatly in tables but absolutely hit your card. Tipping: both destinations run on tips even at all-inclusives, and our estimate for a couple tipping like decent humans is $10-15 a day in either country — call it a wash. Currency: Cancun's peso pricing means street tacos and pharmacy runs cost genuinely little once you leave the hotel zone, while Punta Cana's tourist corridor prices nearly everything in US dollars at US-dollar-ish levels. And seaweed season: both coasts get sargassum some months, neither brochure will ever whisper a word about it, and resort beach crews fight it valiantly every morning — check recent traveler photos for your exact travel window before booking either destination, because the ocean does not read marketing materials.
And the big one: the presentation. If you book Cancun through the vacpack route, your $149-479 all-inclusive comes with that 90-120 minute timeshare presentation baked in, and you should mentally schedule it like a shore excursion you can't skip. Punta Cana discount packages exist too, but the machine there is smaller and our estimated prices for them run higher. For a couple who can politely sit through a pitch, Cancun's presentation economy is a straight-up subsidy — the resorts are effectively paying you several hundred dollars in discount to spend one morning saying no thanks in an air-conditioned room near a very nice pool.
The Verdict
Cancun wins the math, and it's not that close at the low end — our estimated total came out roughly $400 lighter. The $149-$479 preview package range does alot of heavy lifting there, and cheap flights finish the job. Punta Cana is the right call if you found a rare flight deal, you're going for a wedding, or you want maximum resort-bubble and zero exploring. That's a fine reason! Just know you're paying for it.
