Every Cancun trip report starts the same way: "we did Chichen Itza, we swam in a cenote, we snorkeled in Cozumel." Meanwhile me and my wife went to Cancun for five days and the farthest we traveled was Pool 3, wich required crossing a small bridge. People ask what we saw. We saw the swim-up bar from four different angles. We regret nothing and this is our story, formatted as an itinerary so you can live it too.
Is It OK to Never Leave the Resort in Cancun?
Yes — it's completely OK, because you already paid for everything inside the gates and the entire property was engineered by hospitality professionals to be better than whatever the excursion van is idling for. The all-inclusive model means every meal, drink, pool, and beach chair is prepaid; every hour off-property is an hour you're paying for twice. Tour guides will tell you the ruins are a must-see. The ruins have stood since the 9th century, they are definately not going anywhere, and neither are you. That's the deal you made with the swim-up bar.
Day 1: Establish the Perimeter
1:00pm. Arrival and check-in. Accept the welcome drink. This is a binding ceremony.
2:30pm. The reconnaissance lap: walk the ENTIRE property once — every pool, every restaurant, the gym you will wave at, the spa menu. You are drawing the map you'll live on for four days. Note which pool gets afternoon shade and where the towel hut is. This 45-minute walk is the only cardio in this itinerary and honestly it might be too much.
4:00pm. First official swim-up bar session. Absurd-but-real detail: many Cancun all-inclusives have a full bar where the stools are IN the pool, underwater, and there is no rule against ordering a coffee there at 4pm like a completely normal person at a completely submerged desk.
7:30pm. Buffet night one. Do a full scouting pass with an empty plate before committing to anything. Amateurs fill up at station one; veterans know the good stuff is always at the back.
Day 2: The Presentation and the Perfect Afternoon
9:00am. The timeshare presentation — this is how the $149-479 all-inclusive vacpack math works, and it's the only appointment of the entire trip. Ninety to 120 minutes, couples attend together, the coffee is good, and the word "no" is a complete sentence you may recieve unlimited refills of. Then you're free.
11:30am. Beach block. Chair, umbrella, the Caribbean doing its unreasonably turquoise thing. The vendors walking the beach are technically off-property; observing them from your chair counts as cultural tourism and I'll defend that position.
1:30pm. Lunch at the beach grill, eaten in a swimsuit, standing up, no shame in the building.
3:00pm. THE NAP. Air conditioning on arctic, blackout curtains deployed, a nap so serious it has its own agenda item. Vacation science says the Day 2 afternoon nap is the moment your nervous system finally believes it's on vacation.
8:00pm. The a-la-carte restaurant you reserved at check-in (always book these Day 1, they fill up). Someone at your table will say "I can't believe this is all included" and that person will be you.
Day 3: Peak Resort Mode
8:30am. Breakfast omelet station. Learn the omelet guy's name. Tip him. This relationship now outranks most of your friendships.
10:00am. Activities hour: water aerobics, pool volleyball, or the resort's tequila tasting. We did the tasting. There was a quiz. My wife won a keychain and celebrated like it occured at the Olympics.
12:30pm. Spa treatment — the one splurge on top of the package. A massage in a room where you can hear the ocean resets a human being like nothing else on this earth.
3:00pm. Second swim-up session, new angle. Rate the sunset preparations. You're a regular now; the bartender starts your order when you wade into view, wich is the closest most of us get to being a hometown hero.
7:30pm. Theme night at the buffet (there's always a theme night). Attend with full commitment. If it's Italian night in Mexico, that's a fusion experience and you're a foodie now.
Day 4: The Victory Float
9:00am. Final beach morning. Do the thing where you float on your back and think about absolutely nothing. This is the entire point of the trip and you've reached it.
12:00pm. Last buffet pass — you know the layout like a floor manager now. Checkout, one last look at Pool 3, and the solemn vow to "do an excursion next time" that both of you know is a lie.
The excursion is the nap
